Gillingham Anchorians 0 - Medway 29
Tries: Fitzpatrick 2, Clarke, Cornell and Wellard
Con: Stone 2
Cougars Squad:
Bailey, Chalmers, Christodoulou, Clarke, Cornell, Fenton, Fitzpatrick, Gowdy, Hull, Kennedy, Last, Lazell (C), Marchant, Marriott, Morgan, Rawlins, Reynolds, Simpson, Stone, Wardzynski, Wellard and WhitnellAttrocious overnight rain meant uncontested scrums, no lifting in the line outs and a shortened playing time, but both teams agreed to play and still managed to put on some meaningful rugby in the wind and rain with Medway lending Anchorians three players during the match to keep the game going.
Anchorians have improved since the Cougars played them earlier in the season but Medway's greater experience saw them retain much of the ball. A well practiced scrum move saw Liam Fitzpatrick pick up and drive over under the posts for the first try, converted by Dan Stone. Matt Kennedy had a fine game taking the ball on and gaining important yards. One such move led to the ball being presented to the backs, where Charlie Wardzynski broke through the gain line before passing out to James Clarke on the wing who ran in try number two in the corner. Next up was a thrilling piece of individual running from Sam Cornell playing at centre, as he evaded tackle after tackle to run in under the posts, again converted by Stone. The final score of the half came again from Fitzpatrick as he took charge of a lost Anchorians line-out, driving over for the second time. Max Fenton, was unlucky to miss out with a similar attempt just on half time but an Anchorians defender managed to get an arm under the ball to keep it up. Half-time score 24-0. The second half saw more of the same from Medway but the Anchorians defended well, keeping the Cougars to just the one score following a break of fifty metres from Tom Whitnell ending in an offload to Ben Wellard who ran in at the corner. Final score 29-0 to Medway.
No man of the match this week but special mention to Ben Lazell who captained the side well, and Toby Hull, John Last and James Clarke who all appeared for Anchorians at some point to keep the game flowing. Thank you everybody.
